Viacom CEO: Anti-Piracy Legislation Unlikely in 2012
Philippe Dauman says the online rhetoric and opposition surrounding SOPA and PIPA were unnecessarily polarizing.
Hollywood is unlikely to push the legislation forward during this election year, Dauman said, according to a Reuters report. “I am hoping something gets done this year, but I’m a pragmatist.”
Speaking at AllThingsD’s Dive Into Media Conference, Dauman lamented the severe opposition SOPA and PIPA faced earlier this month—blaming “mob mentality” and “unfortunate rhetoric” for putting a halt to the anti-piracy legislation.
“It became almost religious dogma that any legislation built around the process would have broken the Internet and created censorship around the world,” Dauman said, arguing instead that a final bill “would have been very reasonable.” –Abby Tracy
